The 4th Edition of the Experimental Vascular Microneurosurgery Course Brings Together International Specialists in Madrid

From June 9th to 12th, 2026, the 4th Edition of the Experimental Vascular Microneurosurgery: Anastomoses and Repair Techniques course was held at the Experimental Microsurgery Laboratory (IdiPAZ) of La Paz University Hospital in Madrid. The course was designed to develop advanced microsurgical skills with direct application to vascular surgery.

Directed by Dr. Pablo García Feijoo and Dr. Fernando Carceller, both neurosurgeons based in Madrid, the course brought together national and international participants in an intensive program combining theoretical updates, hands-on training, and experiential learning. The course was aimed primarily at neurosurgeons, as well as maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, reconstructive surgery specialists, and other related professionals interested in refining their microsurgical skills.

Over four days, participants had the opportunity to improve their microdissection, microsuturing, and vascular anastomosis techniques through a comprehensive practical program developed in a highly specialized training environment. Continuous supervision by the faculty and instructors ensured a personalized learning experience, facilitating the acquisition of skills with direct clinical applicability.

One of the highlights of this edition was the participation of a renowned multidisciplinary faculty composed of national and international experts in vascular neurosurgery, reconstructive microsurgery, and experimental surgery. The program featured leading specialists from different countries and disciplines, including Dr. Victor Volovici (Neurosurgeon, The Netherlands) and the online faculty members Dr. Mustafa Baskaya and Dr. Abdullah Keles (Neurosurgeons, USA). They were joined by distinguished Spanish specialists such as Dr. Juan Casado (Maxillofacial Surgeon), Dr. Mario Gomar (Neurosurgeon), Dr. Luis Moreno (Neurosurgeon), Dr. Teresa González Otero (Maxillofacial Surgeon), Dr. Luis Landín and Dr. Zhan Q. Lin (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons), and Dr. Carlota Largo (Veterinarian), among many other professionals.

The course also benefited from the active involvement of a dedicated team of instructors and support staff from La Paz University Hospital in Madrid, whose contribution was essential to ensuring the success of the practical sessions and the individualized guidance provided to participants.

During this edition, Dr. María López Fernández, Neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery of La Paz University Hospital, Madrid, was awarded the Yaşargil Award. This distinction is granted in each edition of the microneurosurgery courses to participants selected for their outstanding technical performance and commitment to microsurgical excellence.

The high level of engagement shown by the participants, the outstanding quality of the hands-on training sessions, and the exchange of experiences among professionals from different countries have once again contributed to the success of this edition. Participants particularly highlighted the quality of the teaching, the close support provided by the instructor team, and the highly practical nature of the course.

• October 26th–29th, 2027: Aneurysm Creation & Clipping, Reconstruction Techniques, & Bypass Procedures (2nd Edition)

Both editions will continue to offer highly practical training focused on the development of advanced microsurgical skills and technical excellence in vascular neurosurgery.
