More than 300 professionals in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics reunited in Madrid on September 22 and 23 to discuss the latest advances in Orthognathic Surgery at the event organized by Formedika: "Orthognathic Surgery International Summit: the face is the mirror of the soul".
Dr. José Luis Cebrián (Maxillofacial Surgeon) and Dr. Daniel Díez Rodrigálvarez (Orthodontist) opened the event. Dr. Elena Bonilla (Orthodontist) introduced the first speaker of the day: Dr. Domingo Martín (Orthodontist), who began the event with a presentation on early surgery and early orthodontics. After the lecture on Orthodontics, the Belgian Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Gwen Sennen, presented by Dr. Eduardo Sánchez-Jáuregui (Maxillofacial Surgeon), highlighted the most important clinical points to be taken into account in the preparation of a surgical study.
The tandem composed by Dr. Elisabetta Grendene (Orthodontist) and Dr. Lorenzo Trevisiol (Maxillofacial Surgeon), both from Verona, Italy, made a combined presentation where they spoke about orthodontic tips and surgical preparation of class II and class III cases, a very agile and dynamic talk according to the attendees.
The afternoon began with a presentation by Dr. Dalia Latkauskiene (Lithuania), introduced by the moderator, Dr. Daniel Díez Rodrigálvarez. This time the protagonists were the asymmetries and how to treat them orthodontically and why. The presentation by Dr. Simonas Grybauskas (Maxillofacial Surgeon), dealt with decision making and treatment sequencing and the requirements for good orthodontic preparation. The Italians, Dr. Renato Cocconi (Orthodontist) and Dr. Mirco Raffaini (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon) were in charge of closing a day of very high scientific level.
The second day started off with a bang, with the second part of Dr. Domingo Martín's lecture: "Early surgery yes, but first early orthodontics part II" and the lecture on Class III cases by Prof. Gwen Swennen. Drs. Elisabetta Grendene and Lorenzo Trevisiol have given this second lecture individually and this time they have commented on the completion of Class II cases and what factors to consider intraoperatively. The moderators of this first block were Dr. Iñigo Gómez Bollain (Orthodontist) and Dr. Jorge Guiñales (Maxillofacial Surgeon).
The speakers of the last afternoon, moderated by Dr. Raquel Guijarro (Maxillofacial Surgeon) and Dr. Aránzazu Senosiain (Orthodontist) were the couples composed of Drs. Renato Cocconi with Mirco Raffaini and Dr. Dalia Latkauskiene with Dr. Simonas Grybauskas.
The more than 300 attendees at the event highlighted the quality of the presentations, the format of the event with presentations by teams of orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons and the particularly relevant topics. The way in which the speakers presented their methods and protocols was really interesting. They presented clinical cases very well documented and supported with bibliography. They even presented cases in which there have been complications and things have not gone well, which is of a very high didactic value.
Since digital tools are becoming more and more relevant and virtual planning has also had its place in this summit on orthognathic surgery.
Osteoplac and Nemotec were the two companies that participated in the event to present product novelties and new developments in orthognathic surgery.
